Monday Wine Q&A: Celebrating Max

I had the privilege of actually joining my wine bestie for her show! Catch up on this birthday celebration 🍾 We’re drinking a FLY wine in honor of the expert herself!

Have you ever had a Ruinart Blanc de Blancs? If you haven’t I’d highly recommend it for you own birthday celebration this year!

This was a ton of fun to try and my BGW wine rating is a TEN 💁🏾‍♀️🍷✨

Please ignore my blinking statue posture in the beginning 😂

Happy Monday!

Wind Down LIVE: Desireé

So excited to have another somm join us for #WineDownLIVE! This week we were happy to have Desireé (@winenoire) joining us to discuss another tasty champagne 🍾 for you to enjoy for the holidays.

La Marca Prosecco

Let me just say— I loved this! You all know we haven’t had many champagnes or sparkling wines on the show and that’s because of all wine this one is usually the one I reach for the least unless it’s brunch. But baaaaby this one right here? BOMB. Waste not a second in going to pick this up. You will thank me later!

IMG_7693.JPG

Wine rating: 10

What am pairing with this one? French Fries

How am I brunching with this one? Add lemonade, orange juice, and a splash of cranberry.

Check out this neat trick Desiree uses  to save and style her wine labels! Follow her on IG @winenoire.

Holiday Draaanks: Apple Cider Mimosas

Here is a twist on a classic, Apple Cider Mimosas. This is a simple and delicious recipe that will impress your brunch guests. I recommend a spiced cider (think cinnamon and cloves). If you’re feeling frisky, you can even make the cider from scratch.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Pour apple cider into a champagne flute or cup

  2. Top with prosecco or champagne

  3. Enjoy!

Wine Down LIVE: Wait this isn’t Champagne?!

Winefriends!

Didn't we get our lives last night for #WineDownLIVE with our dear friend Max?! We learned so much from how to hold a wine glass to differentiating sweet to dry varietials.

Here’s a few take seats from last nights episode.

All Champagne is NOT Champagne.

IMG_7499.JPG

The only wines that are called Champagne are wines that are produced from the Champagne region of France. All other bubbly varietals are referenced as sparkling wines. Depending on where these sparkling wines are produced they may have different names.

On Wednesday night we enjoyed a Crémant de Bourgogne, a sparkling varietal from Burgundy. It was quite delicious with notes of strawberry and cherry. This wine rated a 9 on the BGW wine scale and is definitely being paired with brunch any day of the week!

The Sweet Scale

IMG_7530.GIF

We also learned how to tell where wines fall on the sweet to not so sweet scale by paying attention to what what’s on the label. Here’s a breakdown of things you may see on the bottle and what you can expect.

In order from sweet to dry:

Doux - yes sugar yes!

Demi-sec - sweet treat

Extra Dry - moscato lovers beware

Brut - sweet lovers don’t even bother

Extra Brut - sis, this the end of the road

Don’t be a Heathen.

Max also taught us the proper way to hold our glass. At the stem not near the rim! When you hold your wine glass at the base (or the stem) you prevent from accidentally warming up your wine with your body heat! All the classy ladies do this

How to Drink Responsibly This Festive Season

Hello BGW winefriends!

Now that we are heading into a festive period, a lot of crates will be downed. Wine and whisky bottles opened. Cocktails will be made and events attended. I cannot tell people not to drink. (And of course we here at BGW encourage you to enjoy the wine life) However, I can show you how to drink responsibly.

5C04DEB9-A334-467A-B560-F961227823F1.GIF

Let’s be honest, it is hard to live a healthy lifestyle when all you do is drink. However, it is still possible to drink moderately and still be healthy. In this post, I will take you on a journey to help you tweak your drinking habits for your health’s sake.

IMG_7528.GIF

You need to understand how alcohol works when it gets into your body. So Jade (*Random name) is downing drinks at a party. She is taking whiskey on the rocks and doing shots with her friends. The alcohol (ethanol) makes its way to Jade’s stomach where around 20-25% of it gets absorbed into her bloodstream at once. As she continues to show her friends that she can handle herself,  the alcohol goes to her small intestines where it is absorbed in the bloodstream. Once it’s in her bloodstream, the alcohol slowly heads toward to her liver for metabolism. Her liver continues taking it weekend after weekend, month after month. This is her life.

IMG_7526.GIF

Surprising Facts That Jade Doesn’t Know

1. Alcohol use can be a slippery slope. Moderate drinking can offer some health benefits. But heavy drinking can have serious consequences.

2. A standard liver breaks down alcohol at the rate of about one ounce every 90 minutes. An ounce is equal to one shot, a normal beer, a regular sized glass of wine. Jade is taking 5 shots in two hours.

3. Women metabolize alcohol slower than men.  Jade is doing shots with the boys. Lady, don’t try to keep up with the guys. Don’t.

4. If your liver is too overwhelmed, the alcohol remains in your body until your liver can metabolize it all. And Jade wonders why she woke up drunk.

5. Alcohol dehydrates you. Oh, that is why you keep peeing every 30 minutes when you are drinking? Jade doesn’t know that you pee more than you take in so your body dries out slowly. Scary huh?

IMG_7527.GIF

Health: How To Be a More Responsible Drinker

1. Stay Hydrated.

2. Use water as a mixture. Also if you plan to make cocktails, incorporate more ice & fresh juices

3. Avoid shots and if you must, do one per 2 hrs and then hydrate.

4. If you are a lady, don’t try to keep up with the guys. If you are a guy, don’t force the ladies to keep up with you.

5. Take your time. There is no rush. Stop downing drinks like it’s a competition.

6. Remember, ‘The darker the drink, the worse the hangovers’. Hydrate.

7. Order Light cocktails. If a cocktail has more than one type of liquor beware. Most menus have cocktail ingredients so you can know what is in that fancy cocktail glass.

8. Don’t mix different types of liquors. Stick to Vodka, gin, whiskey, wine etc. In this scenario, having a variety/ mixing up will not do you good.

9. Don’t drink on an empty stomach.

10. Don’t drink if you don’t have to. Save all your wine drinking for those big occasions to give your body a rest!

Most importantly DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!

 Be safe winefriends!

FootballxWine series: Pizza & Wine

IMG_4859.JPG
“It’s a hard knock life for us...”

Remember that classic JayZ hit? Well Chrishon Lampley of Love Cork Screw labeled her wine with the catchy phrase and her wine, like the classic rap is a complete HIT!

This week on Wine Down LIVE I put this Concord grape varietal to the test with a classic cheese pizza. Though the pizza left a lot to be desired the pairing itself went well together.

Thank God the wine saved this combo! I love the rich flavor of this wine. To me the Concord grape shows up and came to Part-tay with all the wine lovers no matter how sweet or dry you like it.

Watch the LIVE episode here

Buy the wine here

Wine Rating: 9.5

Pairing Rating: 7 (the pizza was terrible haha)

Notes: Serve this table red with pizza or snacks and at any gathering for all wine lovers!

If you pick this one up you have to let me know how you like it!

FootballxWine series: Merlot & Ribs

This week was the first in our Football & Wine series. I was so excited to review the Merlot for this weeks pairing recommended by one of my favorite sommeliers Benita Johnson. You don’t have to be watching the NFL to enjoy this months pairings. Dig in and enjoy tonights wine review which was my first rated 10!

Bedell Merlot 2015

The Blueberry and spice that this varietal promises does not disappoint. At first sip this Merlot was rich and fruity and oh-so-gooooood.  The spice isn’t too overwhelming and the blueberry isn’t too heavy. It’s perfextion. Pick this amazing Merlot up here to enjoy with your dinner next week.

Oh and fun fact about this wine— the 2009 Merlot from Bedell was served at Presidential Inauguration that year! Now you know you’ve got try this presidential selection.

Purchase here: Bedell Merlot

Shayla’s wine rating: 10

Merlot & Ribs

The dry rub ribs from Mission Barbecue were quite tasty with this Merlot. The grilled flavor was compliment well by the spice of the Merlot. I wasn’t a fan of be sauced Ribs and wine but the original grill will go perfect with a win from the Giants *wink wink*.

Pairing rating: 9

We mentioned this yummy recipe during the LIVE show this week and all the ladies wanted details so here’s the recipe from our founder! If you try it out make sure to share it with us on social with the hashtag #bgwWineDown.

1 container of pre-cut zoodles

1 pack of organic chicken breast

2 tablespoons of Garlic Herb Butter (Sam’s Club)

1/2 jar of Classico Pesto Pasta Sauce

Seasonings: Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Pepper, Oregano, Parsley

Directions: Clean, Season, and cook your chicken breast on top of the stove in olive oil until soft but cooked thoroughy. Add pesto sauce and butter. Once butter has melted down add zoodles. DO NOT cook zoodles longer than 5-7 minutes to make sure they maintain their firm texture and don’t get too mushy. Add extra seasoning and parmesan to taste.
